Do you know the most important consideration for commercial tile flooring? It is designing a place that leaves a memorable first impression on your client and visitors. On top of that, you want to space where your workers feel more comfortable working.
As you've probably guessed, the right Commercial tiles design can cater to all these simultaneously.
Tiles have always been the superior choice when it comes to durability in walls and floor coverings. But apart from that, they offer a superior choice for anyone looking to create a one-of-a-kind business space with stunning designs. Generally, tiles are also easier to maintain than traditional hardwoods and carpets. As such, they offer a plethora of benefits for office buildings, cafes, hotels, and even your retail shops.
We usually measure the durability of a tile in terms of porcelain enamel Institute rating. This is shortened as the PEI. This rating features numbers that range from 1 to 5. One is the least durable, while 5 is the most durable. With this rating, it becomes easier to understand if the tiles chosen are hard enough to eliminate tendencies of wear and tear. Even when used in areas of high traffic, the right tile should be able to withstand every usage.
For residential areas, the rating can be as low as one or two. But if you want something tailored to the commercial space, you want to be targeting at least three and above.
If you run a small business ceramic or porcelain materials with ratings of 2 should suffice. This will help you withstand very light floor traffic in your reception areas and certain office spaces.
However, if you run a retail and hospitality business, you might need more. As such always target a rating of 4. Lastly, the rating of 5 is best suited for extreme industrial, commercial, and institutional applications. So if you run big hotels, a large mall, or any industrial commercial location be sure to use the highest possible hardness rating.
When choosing tiles for commercial Intent, you also have to factor in how resistant the material is to slippage. We assess this by using the DCOF. This is the dynamic coefficient of friction.
The best option for your business space should feature a dynamic coefficient of friction of at least 0.42. At this value, your tiles can be pretty resistant to slippage when water wets them. However, remember that this value does not account for other slippery materials like oil or Grease. So, if you have a floor that is subject to other slippery materials, you may want to elevate the benchmark to 0.8.
Finally, we advise that you work hand-in-hand with a contractor to help you assess the potential conditions on your floor surfaces. Hence, they can tailor your DCOF levels accordingly.
